Athens, Ohio, Passes Fracking Ban; Similar Measures Fail In 3 Other Ohio Towns

Mealey's (June 18, 2015, 3:54 PM EDT) -- ATHENS, Ohio — The residents of the City of Athens voted Nov. 4, 2014, to ban hydraulic fracturing, while similar ballot measures in Gates Mills, Youngstown and Kent were defeated, according to the Columbus Dispatch.


In Athens, the measure — officially known as the Athens Community Bill of Rights — passed 78 percent to 22 percent, according to reports. The bill of rights modifies the city’s municipal laws to prohibit shale gas and oil extraction, reports said.
