Supreme Court Enjoins New York State Executive Order Limiting Religious Gatherings

Mealey's (December 18, 2020, 2:53 PM EST) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a divided per curiam opinion, the U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 25 granted the emergency application of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, N.Y., to enjoin New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo from enforcing an executive order designed to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus by imposing restrictions on the number of people in public gatherings.  The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals had denied an injunction pending appeal of a federal district court’s denial of the diocese’s initial injunction request (Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, N.Y. v.
