Judge Orders Citgo To Pay $81M In Penalties For 2006 Oil Spill

(December 29, 2015, 2:22 PM EST) -- LAKE CHARLES, La. — A federal judge in Louisiana on Dec. 23 ordered Citgo Petroleum Corp. to pay $81 million in civil penalties for violating the Clean Water Act (CWA) after reconsidering issues regarding Citgo’s economic benefit and gross negligence that were raised by the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals when it vacated the judge’s earlier finding that the company should pay $6 million in penalties for a 2006 oil spill that occurred in Lake Charles (United States of America v. Citgo Petroleum Corporation, No. 08-893, W.D. La.; 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 171735)....
