New California Law Regulates Groundwater Resources

Mealey's (June 17, 2015, 8:02 AM EDT) -- SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Calif. Gov. Edmund G. Brown on Sept. 16, 2014, signed legislation that will regulate for the first time the state’s groundwater resources.

Brown signed Assembly Bill 1739 and Senate Bills 1168 and 1319.

According to the governor’s office, the bills establish a definition of sustainable groundwater management and require local agencies to adopt management plans for the state’s most important groundwater basins. The laws prioritize groundwater basins that are currently overdrafted and set the following timelines for implementation:
