Federal Judge: Congressional Policy Intends Tribes To Be Beneficiary Of Gaming

Mealey's (August 4, 2015, 1:49 PM EDT) -- ST. PAUL, Minn. — A federal judge in Minnesota on July 28 held that the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is relieved of its obligation to pay to the city of Duluth, Minn., rent withheld from gaming facility because congressional policy underlying the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) intended that tribes be the primary beneficiaries of Indian gaming (City of Duluth v. Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, No. 09-2668, D. Minn.; 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 97932).
