Preliminary Injunction Halts Tax Collection Against Tribe’s Trust Property

Mealey's (July 29, 2015, 8:41 AM EDT) -- MOBILE, Ala. — A federal judge in Alabama on July 22 held that the Poarch Band of Creek Indians is entitled to a preliminary injunction to keep the tax assessor of Escambia County, Ala., from levying property taxes against trust property held for the benefit of the tribe (Poarch Band of Creek Indians v. James H. Hildreth Jr., in his official capacity as Tax Assessor of Escambia County, Alabama, No. 15-277, S.D. Ala.; 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 95340).
