Panel Finds R.J. Reynolds' Brand Sale Did Not End Its Florida Settlement Liability

(August 3, 2020, 11:40 AM EDT) -- WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A Fourth District Florida Court of Appeal panel on July 29 affirmed a lower court's judgment ordering R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. (RJR) to pay $92.6 million to the state of Florida and $9.8 million to Phillip Morris USA Inc. after finding that RJR's 2014 sale of four cigarette brands did not terminate its liability to make annual payments for those brands to the state under the terms of its 1997 settlement of cigarette-related liability claims brought by the state (R.J.
