California Tells Senior Water Right Holders There Is Insufficient Water

Mealey's (June 18, 2015, 12:53 PM EDT) -- SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s State Water Resources Control Board on June 12 notified 114 senior water right holders in the San Joaquin, Sacramento and Delta watersheds that there is insufficient water to fulfill their rights.

The notice to the holders of 276 senior water rights with a priority date of 1903 or later directs them to stop diversions of water to protect more senior rights and releases of previously stored water. Violators are subject to fines of up to $1,000 per day and $2,500 per acre-foot...
