9th Circuit Dismisses NSA Data Collection Suit Appeal As Moot

Mealey's (March 23, 2016, 10:55 AM EDT) -- SEATTLE — In a March 22 ruling, a Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals panel dismissed an Idaho woman’s appeal over dismissal of her claims that the telephony metadata collection program of the National Security Agency (NSA) was unconstitutional, with the panel holding that the June 2015 expiration of the Patriot Act, which authorized the program, mooted her claims related to the act (Anna J. Smith v. Barack Obama, et al., No. 14-3555, 9th Cir.; 2016 U.S. App. LEXIS 5231).
