Proton Pump Inhibitors Linked To Chronic Kidney Disease

(January 15, 2016, 11:51 AM EST) -- CHICAGO — The use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with a higher risk of incident chronic kidney disease, according to a study published Jan. 11 in JAMA Internal Medicine (“Proton Pump Inhibitor Use and the Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease,” Benjamin Lazarus, et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, Jan. 22, 2016).

Proton pump inhibitors are prescription or nonprescription drugs used to treat acid reflux or “heartburn.” Brand names include Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec and generic omeprazole, Protonix, AcipHex, Dexilant, Vimovo and Zegerid.
