LA Sheriff’s Department Agrees To $53M Strip Search Class Settlement

Mealey's (July 18, 2019, 11:47 AM EDT) -- LOS ANGELES — According to a July 16 motion for preliminary approval filed in a federal court in California, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has agreed to pay $53 million to end a class complaint by female former detainees who claim that they were subjected to “unnecessarily humiliating and dehumanizing” strip searches before entering the LASD’s detention facility (Mary Amador, et al. v. Sheriff Leroy D. Baca, et al., No. 10-1649, C.D. Calif.)....
