Judge: Tribal Court Not Proper Venue For Illegal Cockfighting Case

Mealey's (September 10, 2015, 10:22 AM EDT) -- SPOKANE, Wash. — A member of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation accused of running a cockfighting gambling ring cannot transfer his case from federal court to tribal court because the federal government retains jurisdiction over violations of “federal laws of nationwide applicability that make actions criminal wherever committed,” a Washington federal judge ruled Sept. 8 (United States of America v. Shane Scott Olney, No. 13-cr-2094; 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 119432).
