Tribes’ Right To Hunt Whales, Seals In Pacific Upheld By 9th Circuit

(October 30, 2017, 2:38 PM EDT) -- SEATTLE — Two Washington Indian tribes have the right to hunt whales and seals on their traditional hunting grounds in the Pacific Ocean, but the boundaries of their “usual and accustomed” hunting area set by a trial court must be redrawn because the court was too generous in setting the tribes’ modern-day hunting limits, the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals held Oct. 23 (Makah Indian Tribe, et al. v. Quileute Indian Tribe, et al., Nos. 15-35824, 15-35827, 9th Cir., 2017 U.S. App. LEXIS 20898)....
