California Contractor Asks High Court To Rule On Reach Of Tribal Sovereignty

Mealey's (July 7, 2015, 11:37 AM EDT) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — A California man on June 22 filed a petition for writ of certiorari with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking the court to determine to what extent a tribal officer or employee of a Native American tribe can engage in outrageous and abusive actions and still be entitled to evade legal responsibility by claiming the tribe’s sovereign immunity from lawsuit (Vincent Torres v. The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, No. 14-1521, U.S. Sup.).
