Navajo Nation Newspaper Protected From Suit, Bankruptcy Judge Rules

Mealey's (May 3, 2016, 11:39 AM EDT) -- CAMDEN, N.J. — A Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee cannot pursue a preferential transfer adversary action against a Native American newspaper publishing company because the company is a “subordinate economic entity” of the tribe that enjoys the benefits of the tribe’s sovereign immunity, a New Jersey federal bankruptcy judge held April 29 (In Re: Star Group Communications, Inc., No. 15-25543 [Thomas J. Subranni v. Navajo Times Publishing Company, Inc., No. 15-02497], D. N.J. Bkcy.; 2016 Bankr. LEXIS 1893).
