California Hospital Pays $17,000 To Unlock Network Shut Down By Malware Attack

(February 19, 2016, 1:55 PM EST) -- LOS ANGELES — In a Feb. 17 statement, a Los Angeles area hospital announced that its electronic medical record (EMR) system was fully restored after being locked by a malware attack propagated by unknown hackers.

Allen Stefanek, president and CEO of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center (HPMC), stated that the hospital paid a $17,000 “ransom” demanded by the hackers, calling it “[t]he quickest and most efficient way to restore [HPMC’s] systems and administrative functions.”
