IRS Announces Thwarted Cyberattack Using Stolen Social Security Numbers

(February 11, 2016, 12:19 PM EST) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a Feb. 9 statement, the Internal Revenue Service announced that it experienced an automated cyberattack on its website that was “identified and halted” without compromising any taxpayer data.

The IRS says that the attack on irs.gov happened in January. The attack was focused on the site’s application for electronic filing PINs (personal identification numbers), which taxpayers need to file their returns electronically.
