Judge Upholds BIA Ruling Ousting 66 People From California Indian Tribe

Mealey's (October 2, 2015, 2:24 PM EDT) -- SAN DIEGO — While expressing sympathy for 66 members of a California Indian tribe whose enrollment in the tribe has been canceled by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), a federal judge in California on Sept. 30 affirmed the agency’s decision to disenroll the members, finding that they failed to show that the BIA’s ruling was arbitrary, capricious or an abuse of discretion (Albert P. Alto, et al. v. Sally Jewell, et al., No. 11-cv-2276, S.D. Calif.; 2015 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 133540).
