U.S. Senate Confirms Burwell As New HHS Secretary

Mealey's (June 12, 2015, 9:02 AM EDT) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate on June 5, 2014, confirmed Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the new secretary of Health and Human Services in a 78-17 vote, according to the White House.

In a statement, President Obama commended the bipartisan majority and called Burwell a “proven manager” who can “deliver results.”

Burwell’s confirmation comes after Kathleen Sebelius stepped down in light of the troubled launch of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in October 2013.
