DOI Recognizes Pamunkey As Indian Tribe, Declines To Acknowledge Duwamish Tribe

Mealey's (July 8, 2015, 11:57 AM EDT) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — In separate announcements issued July 2, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) announced that it has determined that the Pamunkey Indian Tribe has satisfied all the criteria for acknowledgement as an Indian tribe within the meaning of federal law while the Duwamish Tribal Organization is not yet entitled to be acknowledged as an official tribe.
