Federal Judge Halts Tribe’s Casino For Lack Of Federal Recognition

Mealey's (August 1, 2016, 2:20 PM EDT) -- BOSTON — The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) lacked the authority to acquire land in trust for a Massachusetts Indian tribe because the tribe was not under federal jurisdiction when the Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) was enacted in 1934, a federal judge ruled July 28 in overturning the DOI’s decision allowing acquisition of the land for a casino, which is currently under construction (David Littlefield, et al. v.
