$8.9M Penalty Assessed Against Fracking Company By Pennsylvania Agency

Mealey's (June 26, 2015, 8:40 AM EDT) -- HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on June 16 announced it has notified hydraulic fracturing operator Range Resources-Appalachia LLC an $8.9 million civil penalty related to a leaking gas well that has released methane into local groundwater.

According to a DEP press release, on May 11 the agency ordered Range Resources to submit a plan to remediate the defective well, but the company failed to do so.
